How does an air source heat pump for domestic water work?

The use of air as a lower heat source is beneficial for economic and technical reasons. The so-called air source heat pump is the standard for this type of equipment for domestic hot water heating. It can have an integrated hot water storage tank, e.g. 200 or 300 litres. It can also be a modular design for direct connection to an existing hot water storage tank.

Hewalex heat pumps are designed both to draw air directly from the room and to draw air independently from outside by connecting a ventilation pipe to the air connection. The air extracted from the heat pump is cooled down by giving off heat and can thus be used for periodic cooling of the rooms. This is practically a free form of cooling, as it takes place at no extra cost with the normal operation of the heat pump.

Connecting the heat pump to an existing installation

The installation of the PCWU heat pump is a relatively straightforward operation that does not usually require extensive building and installation work. The unit’s refrigeration system is air-tight and does not require any intervention, and the connection to the electrical supply is made only via an electrical socket. More work may be involved in making water connections as well as air connections.

Connecting cold and hot water is no different from connecting a standard electric boiler or a hot water storage tank that works in conjunction with a heating boiler. The PCWU heat pump can be equipped with a ventilation kit. For this purpose, it has air flanges for the connection of intake and exhaust air. This allows it to work independently of the air in the building and, on occasion, to cool it in summer.

Selecting an air-to-water heat pump

The selection of a domestic water heat pump is usually done in an indicative manner. Versions with a 200 litre hot water storage tank are typically used for families of up to four people, and 300 litres for families of up to six people. In addition, the compressor power can be chosen. If comfort expectations are higher, the version with a total output of 2.5 kW will provide approximately 25% less water heating time than the 1.8 kW version.

In addition, an electric immersion heater built inside the hot water storage tank will provide emergency or comfort heating if required.
